Many residential communities today have ponds or lakes within the community. Sometimes these bodies of water serve an important purpose while others are simply for the enjoyment of a natural feature. The biggest concern that you will have is how to properly maintain this body of water so that it stays clean and healthy for the entire community to enjoy. Here are some tips you will need for proper lake and pond management.
Ensure Aeration of the Water
Water that does not move can easily become toxic with algae or other dangerous substances. These toxic materials can lead to the death of fish and other organisms in the surrounding area. An aerator can prevent toxic buildup by keeping the water moving and providing that water with movement of oxygen that it needs. If you do need to take care of algae or other materials, you can use an addition of a natural bacteria that can help balance the environment.
Maintain a Balanced pH
One of the things that can cause problems in a lake or pond is the pH balance. Bodies of water used to sustain fish life will need to be kept around 7.5. If this balance is off, there are things you can do to maintain a proper balance. If the pH levels are high, you can add calcium carbonate to lower it. If the pH levels are low, adding limestone chips to the water can help raise the pH to the proper level.
Monitor and Limit Fish Stock
Fish can be a great asset to keep a body of water clean, well aerated and of use to ponds and lakes that allow recreational fishing, but if you stock too many fish in the pond, you can run into a lot of problems. To keep a good balance, you should only stock one fish for every ten gallons of water in the pond.
