Two’s company, three’s a crowd and eight is just plain creepy. At least, it is when it comes to spiders. Few things in the world inspire as much fear and dread as the spider. No matter where you go, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of spiders nearby. They are a particular nuisance for homeowners, where they hide behind curtains, under furniture, in closets and many other locations. While only two North American species are venomous, most people prefer to keep spiders out of the house. Here are four tips that will help.
Vacuum Regularly
Spiders love undisturbed areas, so making a home less hospitable can force them to move on. Vacuum carpets often and move furniture to reach the dark corners they call home. When possible, lift and clean under furniture. Clean closets and sweep seldom-used areas and the upper corners of rooms.
Spraying Is Essential
Essential oils have many benefits, and one of them is warding off spiders and other insects. Peppermint is especially effective and is often used in a solution with vinegar and water to create a powerful yet non-lethal anti-spider spray. Focus spraying around baseboards, windows, doors and in quiet areas like under sinks, in closets and behind and under furniture. Other oils that work well include citrus, eucalyptus, lavender and tea tree.
Change the Lights
Like other bugs, spiders are attracted to the light. Change your exterior lights to yellow or sodium vapor bulbs. Those attract fewer flying insects, which in turn attract spiders.
Hire an Exterminator
If your spider pest control problem persists, it might be time to call in the professionals. Exterminators know exactly where to look for spiders and other insects and each comes armed with an effective yet deadly spray.
